1978 Rolex Air King 5500 Oyster Precision
1978 Rolex Air King 5500 Oyster Precision
The Rolex Air King traces its roots back to the 1930s, before World War II, when Royal Air Force pilots were already wearing Rolex Oyster Bubbleback watches. These watches were larger and more reliable than the standard English models of the time. When Rolex discovered this, they set about designing the Air King, which has changed very little since its launch.
The reference 5500 was introduced in 1957 and remained in production for no less than 37 years. This 5500 is powered by the caliber 1520 automatic movement, the same movement used in the reference 5513 Submariner. Since this movement was not intended for chronometer certification, it features the minimalist text “PRECISION” on the lower half of the dial. The stainless steel case measures 34 mm in diameter, the perfect classic size for a men’s watch. With its clean design, classic dimensions, and silver dial, it is the perfect everyday watch for both women and men.
