Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date 1500: The Complete Reference Guide
Joshua GrilletThe Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date 1500 — commonly called the Rolex 1500 — is one of the most underrated vintage Rolex references. Produced from 1962 to the late 1980s, this 34mm automatic chronometer combines the Oyster case, Perpetual rotor, and a date function at a fraction of the price of a Datejust. This guide covers the reference 1500: specs, movement (caliber 1570), dial variants, lug width, how to spot an original, and current market value for collectors.
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date 1500 was launched in 1962 and was a huge success. Shock-resistant, reliable, automatic, date display, non-magnetic, chronometer... It ticks all the boxes in terms of technical specifications. But what about aesthetics? That's where it really shines. Its design is timeless, and it looks great with any bracelet. The Oyster Perpetual Date has been available in a wide variety of styles. There is a diverse selection of dial colors, hour markers, bezels, and materials (steel, 14k or 18k white and yellow gold), with or without a date display. With a diameter of 34mm (but a real presence on the wrist), you are sure to find the Rolex OP that suits you.
Today's model is from 1972, discreet and of high quality. Smooth bezel, mirrored hour markers, and an impeccable dial. To restore it to its former glory, it needs a new crystal and a proper overhaul.
