1978 Rolex Air King 5500 Oyster Precision
1978 Rolex Air King 5500 Oyster Precision
The Rolex Air King traces its origins back to the 1930s, before the Second World War, at a time when Royal Air Force pilots were already wearing Rolex Oyster Bubbleback watches. These watches were larger and more reliable than the standard English models of the era. When Rolex discovered this, the brand set out to design the Air King, which has changed very little since its launch.
The reference 5500 was introduced in 1957 and remained in production for no fewer than 37 years. This 5500 runs on the automatic calibre 1520 movement, the same movement used in the reference 5513 Submariner. As this movement was not intended for chronometer certification, it displays the minimalist text "PRECISION" on the lower half of the dial. The stainless steel case measures 34 mm in diameter, the perfect classic size for a men's watch. Thanks to its clean design, classic dimensions, and silver dial, it is the perfect watch for everyday wear, whether for a woman or a man.
